Our take on the popular margarita is a simple blend of tequila, orange liqueur, freshly squeeze lime juice and a touch of our Fat Cat Mexican-Style Habanero sauce. We think our hot sauce is the key here: It adds both an appealing tropical orange color to the drink as well as a touch chili heat. This isn’t a blow-your-mind hot cocktail, mind you — it falls far below the heat level found in our Fiery Fat Cat Bloody Mary or Fiery Fat Cat Habanero Martini recipes) but that hint of habanero makes all the different, offering a subtle twist to a familiar flavor. Feel free to blend the mixture to make a frozen drink, or double the amount of Fat Cat Mexican-Style Habanero for extra kick.
Here’s what we did:
1 1/2 oz. silver or gold tequila (don’t use anejo)
3/4 oz. orange liqueur, such as Cointreau, Grand Marnier or Triple Sec
1 oz. freshly squeezed lime juice
1 teaspoons of sugar
1/2 tablespoon Fat Cat Mexican-Style Habanero
Slice of habanero chile or sprig of mint (for garnish — optional)
Kosher or rock salt (to rim the glass)
Add the tequila, orange liqueur, Fat Cat Mexican-Style Habanero, sugar and lime juice into a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
Shake vigorously until the sugar has dissolved.
Taste for sweetness and spiciness levels, adjusting accordingly as needed by adding more sugar and Fat Cat Mexican-Style Habanero.
Wet the rim of a high ball with lime juice and roll the rim of the glass in kosher or rock salt to cover.
Pour contents of shaker into the high ball, garnish with slice of habanero or sprig of mint if desired, and enjoy.
